Deutsche Schule Durban
Website
Faces blurred to protect the students
The brief
Deutsche Schule Durban had two websites: one for the school, and one for its foundation, which raises money for bursaries and development. They wanted a single site, in English and German, for current and prospective parents and for donors in South Africa and Europe. It had to explain the school, list events and vacancies, and point donors to the foundation’s donation portal.
My role
I designed the site together with our creative director and built it with another developer. I also did the quality checks and optimisation, so the whole site works the same way.

How I approached it
We designed in English, but with German in mind. German words are often much longer, so we left room in the layouts, and the main menu still needed adjusting to fit on the German pages.
The site was built in English first. Each page was then duplicated with Polylang and the German content swapped in, using translations the school provided. Events and vacancies are custom post types, so new ones slot into the same layout.
The foundation has its own section in the main menu, spread over several pages, and its branding now sits comfortably alongside the school’s.

The result
The school and its foundation now share one site, in English and German, for parents and donors alike.
